Suspense Series: Pros and Cons

Writing a mystery or suspense series is an interesting thing. On the one hand, it’s nice to know your character(s) so well. On the other, you are forced to sweep aside the other stories and characters swirling around in your head, saving them for another day. Still, not a bad problem to have.

STAY OF EXECUTION, due out VERY soon, is the second in my Detective Cancini series. To be honest, I didn’t create Cancini to be part of a series. It just happened that way. His role in the first book grew bigger with each draft until he became a full-fledged protagonist. I decided to build the second story around him. That decision was validated by readers’ response to Cancini in A GUILTY MIND. At book clubs and in reviews, I heard, “More Cancini!” I’ve already begun the third (but final) in the series, THE LAST SIN.

Is it okay to fire your publisher?

Loved this post ! A lot of creative people are not as marketing savvy and also feel beholden, (today’s ease with cyber-marketing has changed that a bit) I feel it is absolutely OK to fire anyone who is not right for you, a bit like… switching jobs!

The Musings of A New Englander

anger_pain_terror_scream_58439Is it okay to fire your editor, illustrator or even your publisher? Let me break it down.

When it comes to your editor, absolutely. This one is a no brainer as far as I am concern. Editors are expensive. I have seen authors let this part of their book slide. After all a writing group or beta readers can do the trick, right? We know this is wrong. You can’t get away without an editor to help you get your book in the best shape it can be in. But you can fire your editor if they don’t do your book justice. There are so many editors out there, good quality ones, so don’t feel bad in giving your editor the shaft.

Illustrators fall into the same category for the same reason. There are many illustrators who, like editors, rang in price and also range in talent. If you feel…

I have made some great buddies through cyberspace, FRIENDSHIP is certainly a way to be defined. True friendship means we all understand how busy everyone is and indeed at times it is hard to keep up. I met Toi Thomas a few years ago, I was very impressed by her interview format and requested an interview.

I am a big fan of ETERNAL CURSE & The Companion Guide to the Book ( A Brilliant Idea I plan to copy some day).

I have learned a lot from this young woman, and I just love catching up with her,  and it just has been too long since we had a nice chat……

1) Happy New Year Toi, I hope you closed 2014 on a happy note. Any new plans for 2015? Well my 2014 ended on a sour note, but I have high hopes for2015. This year my husband and I will celebrate 10 years of marriage. It almost

makes me feel old, but I don’t mind so much because he’s getting old with me.

I’ve been working hard to crawl out my shell and spend time with people outside

of my family and have actually made some cool new friends. I’m feeling pretty

blessed right now.

OLD? Oh my friend from where I stand (Old enough to be your mother) you are OOOZING with youth! Ten years is great, my husband and I are celebrating 24 this year.

2) Did I notice more reviews on your blog? Or is it my own guilty feeling that I do not review often?  In 2014 I started something new that I’m happy to continue.I’ve stepped up my reviewing efforts. I try to post two book reviews a month

and have even started to review movies. Some people have preferences with these

two story methods, but I love them both. Here’s a link

to one of my more interesting movie reviews.

That is really clever to set a goal of two reviews per month.

Also, I’ve been gaining some interest in my personal memes:My Geekdom, Top 5, and Listography. I really enjoy seeing readers contributetheir answers to the post of the day. I’ve been steadily working to improve The

ToiBox of Words and even just recently completed my latest renovation, which

makes it easier for readers to learn about my books and find where to

buy them.

I love the Geekdom Top 5, I remember when you were so kind to video interview me and you taught me about my Geekdom, I am so fortunate to have young friends

3) As you know I am a BIG fan of Eternal Curse any news on the series?Well, now that I’m without a publisher and feeling prettygood about it, I’ve decided to hit the ground running with my Eternal Curse

Series. I recently performed a cold relaunch for the latest edition and am planning

a big release for the sequel on May 16th 2015 at my local Tidewater

Comicon. I’m so excited. I’ll even be launching a video series to promote it on

my whacky You Tube

4) Dreams, Hopes and Desires? I’d love for this year to be all about sales, but I honestlyhave more planed than that.  Since I’m

crawling out of my shell, I figured I’d try some new things. I have a

romance I wanted to publish early this year, but I put it aside to work on

Eternal Curse. Have no fear; it’s still coming out and I can’t wait to really sharing

people. I’ve already been teasing my readers with my Sample Sunday posts, which

feature samples from both Eternal Curse books and my romance, It’s like the

Full Moon.

Today is a full moon! I am so thrilled you dropped by and I hope everyone will also visit THE TOIBOX of WORDS  and see what I am up to in 2015

In 2015 one of my new hobbies is making fun video and here is what I made for my friend Toi Thomas. Oh Toi… I should make one for the companion guide

DbO in lights

A word, a single word defines a moment for Anne. She needs to find a new one when her spouse leaves her at the age of 47, coming out of the closet literally in a closet. She finds herself back in her hometown amongst her high school friends which she left behind in her past.

An inheritance from a friend leaves her with the means to meddle and spy on the lives of some of their mutual acquaintances. In an attempt to run from her reality Anne gets engrossed in a game of “fun” and “flirtation” with her friend and fellow sufferer Connie at her side. Anne however did not read all the files and what to her is fun games turns into a deadly reality. It is no longer a game.

Life, death and not even a defining word can stop the reality of manipulation.

A number of examples could easily be included for any number of reasons. Where does one draw the line between fact and opinion in history? This was strongly argued in the spring of 2013 when the George W. Bush presidential library and museum opened its doors to the general public. In it, many felt that there was an inexcusable distortion of recent events, excusing or explaining events in a way that made the ex-president shine in what many consider a most undeserving light.
