Zoey Sheffield never understood the appeal of the unknown. She’s a woman who knows what she likes. A blunt woman. A woman who craves control. She doesn’t need love—the mere idea of romance is detestable and, no, she does not need a man to stand by her side. She would much rather have their company in bed—or in a car—or in an alleyway—the location isn’t relevant, really. What’s important is that she could happily and promptly bid them adieu after they served their purpose and then, she could move on to the next one. The world that she’s been thrust into, however, is one where that thought seems utterly impossible.

It’s all because of the men. The stupid men.

There’s James Turner, the tall, muscular, tattooed one. Charming and charismatic with a sarcastic flair that knows no bounds, he’s worked for months to chip away at Zoey’s stone clad will to avoid romance with expertly placed sledgehammer strikes.

And, then, there’s Liam Cohen. Blonde and freckled, burly with golden retriever energy, a playboy mindset and a disguised damaged past, he and Zoey have long fallen into a friendship that both of them wish to remain a constant in their lives.

The men have made Zoey’s life more complicated than she wished it to be, and she struggles to hold onto the reins to her own reality. The universe that she’s a part of has different plans, however, for there is more for Zoey that lurks in the shadows. The threat crouches in the distance, hides around corners, and awaits the most imperfect opportunity to present itself. It’s ready to snatch the reins from Zoey’s hands altogether—and the uncomfortable unknown that she’s forever attempted to avoid is now a darkness that threatens to drown her completely.

Thinly Veiled

The Veiled Series, Book One

The past haunts her, the present beguiles her…and the future is ready to bring her full circle.

Freshly escaped from her unfulfilling and unnecessarily stressful criminal past of drug dealing and theft (and the manipulative ex-boyfriend associated with it), the beautiful, foul-mouthed romantic Claire Branson needs a fresh start. Routine. Monotony. An authentic happiness that could feel…simple. She needs her chaotic life to go right for once – please, and thank you.

Claire never expected her run of bad luck to turn so quickly. After moving to the Appalachian small town of Salem, Virginia, a spur-of-the-moment visit to a nearby tavern leads to new, unforeseen possibilities when she opens the front door and locks eyes with Luke Turner, the steel-grey eyed bartender at the run-down watering hole.

Luke could be the simplicity that Claire longs for – he’s undeniably sexy, sarcastically sweet, and, above all, radiating innocence. But with Claire’s dark past festering under the gauze of her quick getaway, will Luke be able to keep his innocence? And, more importantly, will they get out of everything alive?

Thinly Veiled is a steamy medium burn romance novel with a dark, adventurous edge that keeps fans of suspenseful romance novels turning pages, wondering if that ‘happily ever after’ ending will ever really come for Claire and Luke…while their passionate soirees will leave us all begging for more of their steamy love scenes.

“OMG, I just finished. This book was amazing. I cried, was on the edge of my seat; man, those sex scenes… damn. Eliza’s writing is impressive; I could see it all in my head so easily, and I didn’t see how it would end. I loved the ending, though. Yes, I totally cried!” – Amazon Review

“The writer expertly weaves together multiple plotlines, leaving readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page. “Thinly Veiled” is a must-read for anyone who loves a good suspense novel with a healthy dose of snark and irony.” – Amazon Review

About the Author

Eliza Modiste lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband, daughter, and an abundance of animals. Graduating in 2017 with a degree in accounting, she became immersed in the ever-riveting world of numbers and reconciliation. Shortly thereafter, as a hobby – or, perhaps, a method of escape – she began to write in her spare time.

Her first novel THINLY VEILED started as creating characters that mimicked the brash, humorous, never-ending monologue in her mind. Combining this and a heavy splash of romance similar to the books that she would often get lost in made for an entertaining way to pass the time. This hobby, however, eventually blossomed into a full-blown passion. THINLY VEILED has since morphed into a mix of both romantic comedy and suspense, and Eliza has plans for several more novels to follow THINLY VEILED

When not writing, Eliza can be found baking, binging a television series, or spending time with friends and family.

I am thrilled to have M.C.V. Egan as my guest on Focus on Fiction. The two of us connected when she was a host during one of my blog tours for REINVENTING RITA, and she was kind enough to give me tips on making book trailers. (Not my skill set!)

So when I learned more about her and her work, I thought I would return the favor and have her on to talk about her books. But before we get into that, here’s a bit more about her…

McMinnville

Science Fiction

Two photographs taken on a spring evening in 1950 that seem to show the impossible-we are not alone. A thirteen-year-old girl disappears the same evening, but returns thirty years later without aging a day. A dying detective on the hunt for the answers to one mystery falls afoul of a more profound mystery that calls into question all of human history and the science on which the universe is based. McMinnville is the story of one man’s coming to terms with his mortality and the inconceivable, while falling in love for a second time, something he thought was impossible.

Ray Baker is a retired NYPD detective, dying of cancer and dealing with the crushing loneliness after the death of his wife. He wants to make the last few months of his life count by traveling cross country to the places where he grew up. Along the way, he stumbles upon a cold case that took place on May 11, 1950, a few hundred yards from his childhood farm outside of McMinnville, Oregon. At a little past seven in the evening on that day, Evelyn Forsyth was feeding her rabbits when she looked up to see a craft floating soundlessly toward her. She called for her husband, Glenn, to come with his camera. Over a span of a few seconds, he took two photographs before the craft tipped up on edge and sped away. That was the story that appeared in the Telephone Register, McMinnville’s local paper under the heading “At Long Last-Authentic Photographs Of Flying Saucer[?]” A month later, the photographs were featured in the June edition of Life Magazine. Were they real or a clever hoax? Ray takes it upon himself to answer this question, applying his considerable detective skills. But in doing so, he steps through the looking glass into a world that makes him question everything. If that was not enough, he also discovers that there is a clock and it is ticking down.

McMinnville is the first book in a trilogy that follows Ray Baker’s pursuit of life, love, and the truth, which is most definitely out there.

Nothing Good Happens After Midnight

A Midnight Madness Nightcreature Novel Book 1

They say a mother will do anything for her child . . . I’m living proof

This nightmare began when I got the call every parent dreads. My daughter, Jenna, was missing from her college campus. Of course, my mind went to the worst place. After all, my late husband was a powerful senator. Was this some political payback?

I call in a favor and soon I’m partnered with an FBI sex trafficking agent. He tells me local girls have been disappearing for some time now, and he finally has a lead. But what we find at that abandoned warehouse is something out of a horror movie.

Werewolves! Two rival packs, their alphas fighting, winner take all––the pack and the trafficked girls. The werewolves must replenish their breeders, recently decimated by a virus that killed only the females.

But Jenna’s been keeping a secret, which only makes two of us. Though I should be angry, I know the lies I’ve told play a huge role in why we’re here. I’ll do anything to make it right. No way is my girl going to become a sacrificial mate for the greater good––even if she is the ‘chosen one.’ So, I do what any mother would do, I take her place, offering myself to Gideon, the winning alpha, as his mate.

Gideon’s goal is to live in harmony with the human world, but there are others who exist for the power, for the violence, and they don’t plan to let peace prevail.

There’s a civil werewolf war brewing and I am right in the middle of it.

She worked as a waitress and later enrolled in college to become a teacher.

Dance with the Ants is a picture book about a spontaneous picnic undertaken by a mother and her son. The decision to have a picnic triggers concern when they think about the possibility of pesky ants invading their planned day of fun. Surprisingly, their picnic worries turn into an afternoon of music and dance thanks to some uninvited guests at their picnic site.

Music, animal, and outdoor enthusiasts will love this colorful book that includes a touch of rhyme. The book is geared for ages 4-8 and displays colorful illustrations on every page of the story.

Please enjoy reading as your child’s vocabulary and cognitive development increases.

For discussion after reading: Adults can use this story to help youngsters realize that a child’s worries about upcoming events (i.e. summer camp, first day of school, going to a medical office) often times actually turn into fun-filled outcomes.

 About the Author

Having grown up on a small farm in rural Virginia, I learned what hard physical work was at a young age. I was blessed to have four siblings so whenever there was any time for recreation, we would sometimes play together and other times each of us would focus our minds on our personal hobbies. My interests included drawing and spending time with animals, especially horses and ponies. I remember many days of horseback riding through the woods, all over local farms and backroads made of dirt. Often times, I pretended that I was living in a wild, western day and had to rough it in the wilderness. I appreciate now that a child’s imagination is a precious gift.

As an adult, I focused on healthcare and have worked professionally in that field for many years. After marrying in my mid-30s, living in various states, raising three beautiful children, and now experiencing life as a grandmother, my husband and I have resettled in the state of Virginia on a serene farm with horses, a pony that our children grew up riding, a dog, and a cat, along with abundant wildlife to admire on a daily basis.

I do recall as far back as my early twenties that I had a great desire to write a book. Many busy years of life consumed my time; however, I never let that dream of writing a book dwindle. As I approach my retirement years, I have transitioned that book writing dream to one of my bucket list goals.

Thanks to many acquaintances, good friends and a supportive and loving family, I view my life’s journey as enlightening and enriching. Recently, I have embraced the role of author. This allows me to put a check mark beside one of my personal bucket list items which makes me very happy : )

I encourage everyone who has a dream to never let it fade. If it lingers in your heart and mind, there is a reason. Strive to reach your goal, but always remember to appreciate the journey along the way.
