Chapter One

Adair

The vastness of the sky consumed him. It always had, ever since  he  was  young,  but  tonight  seemed  different.  The  churning dark clouds cast a purplish hue, bleeding with the softness created from the moon. The stars shone between the pockets, obscuring the scene and making it beautiful. Far below him, the Ruined City laid in its grave, quiet and still, the broken buildings reminding him of splintered  bones.  The  wildness  of  the  forest  beyond  that  seemed entrancing,  calling  him  into  its  depths,  whispering  its  secrets  to only him.

Adair Stratton tugged his button-down jacket tighter around him, trying to block the wind from his lookout post. It had taken years  to build his kingdom to what it was now, but he was relieved for  the  hidden  lookout  posts  that  led  outside,  on  the  edge  of  the mountain, and, to him, the edge of the world. Because it was here, and  only  here,  that  the  voices  started  to  ebb,  the  darkness  in  his veins  smothering  ever  so  slightly.  In  this  brief  and  flickering moment of clarity, his mind wandered to the girl who was locked in  the  cells  of  his  kingdom,  waiting  for  him.  Emory  Fae,  the Princess of Kiero.

He  popped  his  collar  up,  shaking  his  head  and  sighing. Under the blanket of night, he could trace back to the man he used to be, the echo of his humanity. Thinking of her, he could see the splaying  of  memories  come  back  to  life  all  around  him,  of  his friends,  of  the  Academy.  And  it  was  in  these  sparse  moments  of lucidity,  he  allowed  himself  to  remember.  Relishing  it,  pushing back  that  yearning  for  destruction,  pushing  back  on  the  voices, trying to lock  them  away. And like every other night, he lost. The wind howled, making the edges of his coat and pants tug upward, his hair standing on end from the sudden chill.

His  boots  kicked  against  the  slick  mountainside,  his  heart racing  as  the  smooth  voices  filled  his  consciousness.  “Adair,  this kingdom is yours. Make her bow, make her bleed and pay for what she has done.”  He closed his eyes for a beat, digging his fingernails into his flesh.  “Why  do  you  wait?  You  know  what  you  want.  What  you  have always  wanted.”   Images  were  thrown  at  him;  so  quick  and enthralling, it swept his breath away. The inky crown, embedded with  roses  and  thorns,  laid  delicately  on  top  of  her  ebony  hair. Memphis  Carter,  the  once  commander  of  the  Black  Dawn Rebellion,  bowed,  pleading  for  his  life  as  Adair  smirked.  His darkness  whisked  away  any  trace  of  rebellion.  Emory  was  by  his side as they watched the world continue to burn, until it was only them. Always, for  them.

Adair  snarled,  then  said,  “Leave  me  alone.  Please.”   Their snickers bounced around him, their whispers tugging at his heart. “Do  not  falter  now,  our  Dark  King.  You  have  come  so  far,  achieved  so much. The binds your father tried to keep you in, you broke. The Academy kept you in, you turned it to ash. We are a team. We know the desires of your  soul,  how  you  revel  in  watching  the  world  shudder  in  your  reign. You have always been more. A reckoning force that no one can stop. Can never stop.”

He became still, his muscles taut. Opening his eyes, his gaze fell  a  thousand  miles  away,  to  where  the  Academy  had  stood. Where a boy that once wanted to explore the world and not shackle it had lived. He knew both were dead now. Ice coursed through his body, spreading through his core faster than he could register. His pulse  slowed,  the  roaring  emotions  he  felt  slowing  as  well. Darkness  encased  him,  pulling  him  down,  down,   down.  Locking him  away,  roaring,  snarling,  and  clawing  at  him.  A  slow  exhale escaped  from  between  his  dry  lips,  and  as  he  stood,  every movement was precise, a predatory grace. Flicking his gaze below him  once  more,  and  instead  of  the  dark  beauty  that  he  was  met with earlier, the world around him was bleeding. Dark, black blood gushed  from  the  mountainside,  thickly  caking  the  field  and  the Ruined  City.  Echoes  of  screams  filled  the  air,  and  Adair  was transported, reminded of his bloodshed, of his control and power. “Do not disappoint us, our King.”

The  corners  of  his  lips  tugged  upward  as  he  whispered  to the wind, “I won’t.”

Inside  he  screamed,  ripping  at  his  mind,  battering  against the  iron  wall,  only  to  be  drowned  entirely  by  it.  He  turned smoothly, walking back into his world, each step anchoring him to his intentions.  Make them bow and make them pay. Make  her  pay.  He didn’t  look  as  he  stepped  off  the  side  of  the  cliff,  freefalling.  He plummeted, the wind howling, the cool night air stinging his skin. He  laughed,  relishing  in  the  exhilaration  of  adrenaline,  before  he was wrenched up, his body breaking down into particles of smoke and the darkness. Cutting through the sky, he didn’t think, he just reacted to the power inside of him, and everything else bled away. Arching, he cut through the clouds, moisture collecting around him like  glinting  crystals,  before  they  exploded,  and  he  cut  down, racing towards the mountain range. The moon bathed his path in luminescent  light,  and  it  was  mere  seconds  before  he  slammed through the wall, through stone and wood. The smoothness of the throne  room’s  granite  made  his  footfalls  silent  as  the  guards  on their rotation jumped at his arrival.

He scoffed. “You all seem uneasy.”

They  bowed  their  heads,  their  low  murmurs  cutting  over one another.

“My King, we weren’t expecting you.”

“The losses, my King.”

“What is our course of action?”

“Enough!” he snapped, his cold voice bouncing off the walls and silencing them instantly. He looked at the black marble and his throne, smooth, each curve carved precisely, the bones of monsters long forgotten inlaid in it. Taking a steadying breath, he looked at each guard, quietly stating, “You will all do your duties and leave the Rebellion to me. As for the girl, bring her tomorrow, along with the  other  prisoner.  Each  decision  I  make  has  a  purpose,  and  you aren’t  doubting  your  allegiance  to  me  now,  are  you?” Shifting uneasily, the guards paled in the soft light, swallowing nervously. Their silent answer enough. Pacing, he snapped, “Now, leave me. Return to your stations.”

They  bowed,  each  footfall  a  distant  tick  against  his  mind, until  the  stillness  of  the  night  filled  him,  and  he  was  alone  once more. Striding, he threw himself on his throne, legs hanging over the  edges,  hands  propping  his  head  up.  Far  above  him,  the  stars glinted  down,  the  sky  opening  him  up  to  the  thousands  of uncharted miles in between space and time. And he thought of the girl who had defied it all.

Chewing his lip, he started to count down the seconds, the minutes,  and  the  hours  until  he  was  alone  with  her.  And  they would both see what side of him would decide her fate.

As a direct descendant of the God of Death, Cassandra Saélihn is considered the most
dangerous monster of all time. Her own mother locks her in a cage to protect the world from her lethal potential. Cass thought this imprisoned life would be her fate, but then four sexy, formidable warriors–a vampire lord, twin fae princes, and a demigod–find her.

They claim she’s not a monster, but a powerful weapon, one who can kill the Olympian gods, who have returned to Earth with a vengeance. But Cass has a mind of her own and can’t be told what to do, no matter how drawn she is to her four warrior saviors. To their dismay, the four warriors can’t tame the wild, cunning, and volatile Cass. But they have a bigger problem–their growing attraction toward her.
To turn the woman they desire into the ultimate weapon and ensure Earth’s survival, they’ll have to conquer her body and heart, which seems even more impossible than winning the war against the atrocious gods. Read an Extract:

After a few long minutes, the gentle voice is carried in the steam again. ‘Do you believe He can talk to you?’

Marie feels lured, tries hard not to be hypnotised by the young woman’s voice.

‘Do you think He can tell you what to do?’

Marie shrugs.

‘I don’t know about things anymore,’ admits Nadia, and her expression sounds burdened, chagrined with something she’s unable to speak of nor hide any longer. Next, she takes a sponge by the side of her leg and starts vigorously rubbing her naked body, from her hips down, almost in punishment.

Marie closes her eyes and leans against the wall.

‘Are you studying in London? Do you like it?’ Nadia has stopped her scrubbing, arrested it at her toes, but her nude body is still bent forward like a contortionist’s over the bench, looking exposed and unguarded.

‘I’m not much of a student,’ Marie confesses. She should warn Nadia, she too comes with her own madness, a birdcage in her head. But she says nothing. ‘London is better than Paris.’ She’s not even from Paris but will leave it at that. On n’attrape pas les mouches avec le vinaigre (you won’t trap flies with vinegar), she tells herself.

When Nadia extends her hand to offer Marie the sponge, she feels only mildly conflicted. In fact, she’s eager to let Nadia move straight in like an invading peacekeeper force. ‘If you are interested in yellow, tulips have arrived,’ she wants to sing to her welcomingly. Nothing happens to Marie anymore, and if it’s to be like this forever, she’s not sure she will be able to endure it. Plus she has never been very punctilious when it comes to personal health anyway; she’s hardly a dedicated destroyer of filth and germs living up to strict standards of sanitation; she’ll happily take that sponge and rub it all over herself. Yet she wonders, for a second, what it all means to Nadia, as the woman assaults the fortress of Marie’s heart; they know nothing about each other.

Despite that fact, Marie can’t help feeling utterly corruptible against any sane logic.

Nadia must read Marie’s thoughts and approaches her, ready to scrub Marie’s back herself. ‘Sisters do it where I come from,’ she assures her.

Marie gives in without reproach, lets the unknown young woman rub her back as if it were her own, both set to open folding doors to their bodies that will allow them to enter one another, as if they were twins, miniature replicas able to play each other’s roles, live each other’s lives, despite having only just met.

Why should she say no to her nude body bruising under a sponge in Nadia’s four-fingered right hand (she hasn’t asked about that), her feet pressed over the bench? What would she be waiting for before saying yes?

THE ENIGMA GAMERS

How you feel when other people are talking about your writing

This is an interesting topic for discussion.  Having recently attended an authors’ workshop, we spent a lot of time giving and taking feedback. When you talk about writing or listening to others talk about yours, we find there are two schools of thought. Someone can attack you personally rather than talk about the various writing aspects. For example, when you introduced John, you failed to provide the reader with enough detail to get them to draw a picture in their mind or connection. This far nicer than something like, That John guy you added was about as useless as your writing. You need to take your ideas into a dark hole and flush them out, before thrusting onto the public at large. A bit harsh at best.

As an author you expect all your targeted audiences to love your product. In our case that is a TechnoThriller story. The Breakfield and Burkey formula for that genre is real technology applied to a specific subject focus, such as cryptocurrency as in The Enigma Source, with characters who have real life backgrounds, travel, intrigue, mystery, and a dollop of humor. Not everyone who uses smart devices, likes a bit of complexity in their stories, or even appreciates applied technology. What we hope for are readers who fall in love with the stories and return for the growing character universe and the next immersive story we craft so our readers and listeners become our raving readers and voracious listeners.

Then there are written reviews, which we also consider other people talking about our writing. Kirkus Reviews has provided comments on every one of our stories https://www.kirkusreviews.com/ which has helped each subsequent story improve. In fact, one of their comments was regarding Julie and Juan who we had paired up to work a specific story angle. The comments Kirkus made were so favorable we decided to do a fork in the series at book #7, The Enigma Gamers – A CATS Tale, to explore their new business of feet-on-the-street cyber technicians. We recently released this in audiobook format with our fabulous narrator, Derek Shoals, our voice of the series.

Reading all the reviews is something Burkey takes seriously and does each morning. Make certain and do a lot of reviews so she can make a day of reading them. If they are mean spirited, she is depressed and tries to analyze all the inuendoes whether stated or imagined. One extremely mean review was a personal attack that questioned our professional careers. In an effort to seek clarity an email exchange was done by Burkey which allowed further pointed comments to be made. Some people love being “trolls” based on the anonymity of the Internet today so they can launch unfounded attacks without having to look the person in the eye. It is a real shame as it only demonstrates a lack of personal integrity.

Constructive feedback is something Breakfield and Burkey appreciate. We try very hard to be mindful of our fans and their enjoyment of our stories. The commentary we have received on various characters’ and their evolution have made us smile. People tend to evolve just like our characters do. Some in good ways and others in poor ways. In our stories the bad actors do eventually receive their just deserts.

We very much look forward to hearing your comments or seeing your reviews. You can reach us directly at Authors@EnigmaSeries.com.

The Enigma Gamers – A CATS Tale (The Enigma Series Book 7)

Has today’s technology advanced to the point that the line between the real and cyber worlds has vanished? If so, will this unchecked digital landscape provide new social predators with opportunities to unleash terror and pain on unsuspecting victims, while avoiding detection from anywhere in the world? How does anyone find the culprits holding international cities, big businesses, air traffic, and even emergency systems hostage to terrifying digital ransom demands.

Julie and Juan’s cyber assassin technology services team are immersed in these outrageous cyber-crime events occurring at multiple locations around the world. The CATS team is the next generation of hunters in the find and fix contest of cyber warfare, unlike any seen to date. How will they prove that the of 21st century video game playing has evolved beyond the that simple after-school distraction for children? With Supercomputers, the adage ‘bigger toys for bigger boys’ takes on a whole new definition. These Gamers may be after far more than just points.

George, Ty, Ernesto, Mercedes, EZ, and even Juan—travel to and investigate their respective assignments where they find they are undermined by organization’s leadership unwilling to listen to reason, playing the part of victim. Tampering with automated processes, driven by today’s explosion of technology use, is only the beginning of the competitive nature of these players. Cyber bad guys always think they can’t be caught or stopped.

Award-winning authors, Breakfield and Burkey, take their fans into this grittier story of The Enigma Series to explore virtual hacking within our technology dependent world. Book 7 of the series, The Enigma Gamers, A CATS Tale, is focused on misguided technology using Julie and Juan’s talented and tenacious team of professionals committed to finding and punishing evil achievers in every corner of the real and virtual worlds.

EXCERPT FROM RISE OF PROPHECY

Gods. War. Judgement Day. Novelist Abdur R Mohammed blends ancient myth, religious belief systems, and his deep imagination to create a fantastic new world on the pages of his fiction debut, Rise of Prophecy.

The Age of Virgo ends with an ancient Anuk prophecy looming over the world: peace ushers in prosperity; war brings annihilation. Prince Timon of Atlantis seeks the power of the Anuk star-people to conquer the world, but is challenged by the mysterious Liviana, who attempts to prevent the prophecy from unfolding. She is on a collision course with Alexius, a disgraced noble who inherits a secret from the gods. War is coming. Mortals and gods are in an epic power game in which strength, smarts, and allegiances are tested.

Chapter 19: The Gap of Cora

~ The Gap of Cora ~

It was just four days ago when Alexius ran into Stavos with prince Timon at the underground fight club.  There was nothing out of character with the Commander then, but the next day, there was an anxious way about him.  They made their way to Cappadocia with haste, barely set up camp, and battled the nomad warriors.  Now without rest, they were about to storm what looked like dwellings.

Then there were the physical signs of anguish in Stavos.  His eyes were bloodshot with bags forming under his eyelids.  He was always sweating as if his body was trying to burn out an infection.  He was quick to get angry, and rarely made any sarcastic comments about, anything.  There is something wrong with him, Alexius acknowledges silently.

“Do you know what a nomad child turns into?” Stavos asks, “A warrior!  This is our chance to stamp out the disease, here, now!”

Horror overcomes Alexius, “You’re talking about genocide; mothers, children, families.”

“You’re a fucking soldier!” Stavos points out.  “Those little shits will turn into the dead out there.  Before that, they will wait to slit your noble throat the first chance they get.  Don’t go soft on me now.  Tell you what, you and Deidra can plunder when we are finished.”  Alexius looks at him as if he got caught with his hands in the coffers.  “I know about your exploits.”
