Interview with ALEX HAYES author of SIREN SONG

  • To create the character Connell Kurēn did you have a chance to interview any paparazzi?

I confess, I didn’t interview any press photographers or paparazzi. Instead, I searched for articles about the paparazzi and about the challenges they face and their reputation. I’ve only run into a paparazzo once, in New York City, when I was meeting a friend who is a retired actor. It was a bit of a spooky experience because I wasn’t expecting this guy with a camera to appear out of nowhere!

  • Connell Kurēn is an unusual name. How did you come up with it? Where is he from? How old is he? What led him to such an unpopular profession?

It’s fun planting meaning in names. I chose Rowan and Connell because they are both Celtic names and they appealed to me. As with Idris and Cadi/Catrin (which are Welsh), I’ve pair the names of bond mates to a nationality. Kurēn means crane in Korean, and as Connell transforms into a birdlike creature, I thought that would be a very appropriate name for him.

  • Your character Rowan Bren suffers from PTSD, I love when a book opens awareness through fiction in a way that can help readers be aware. How and why did you choose PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress is something that’s in the news and our social awareness a lot these days and it seemed an appropriate disorder for Rowan to suffer, considering the trauma she deals with in Perfect Pitch.

  • Los Angeles is like New York one of those cities that we all love to visit and feel as part of the experience, Did you use a map of L.A. to help the characters navigate the city ?

Yes, I did use a map, but also relied on my memories of the L.A. area and California in general. I spent my teenage in Northern California and I have many fond memories. It’s always a treat to go back there.

  • Siren Song is the third in Chameleon effects. Can they be read as stand-alone or do we need to get to know the characters from one book to another?

I’ve tried to provide enough backstory that each book can be read independently, but to get the most enjoyment out of the stories, they should be read in order.

  • I see that you live in Guanajuato. Have the Mummies there inspired any of your stories?

The Mummies haven’t inspired me, yet, but you never know, there might be such a book in my future!

There are some beautiful old buildings in this area of Mexico, including the ex-hacienda where I live. In this hacienda, there are underground passages connecting the ex-hacienda with the church, granary and mill. The passages still exist, but as far as we can tell, they’re blocked. We have not attempted to explore them, other than to look down a hole where the first arch is visible. Also, in a town close by, stands a convent that is magnificent (built by the same Catholic priests who built our hacienda). It’s constructed like a fortress with amazing flying buttresses and beautiful inner courtyards. Definitely a place to get inspired and would make an amazing setting for a Gothic novel.

On the topic of setting books in Mexico, I do have a planned trilogy that is partly set in an old hacienda with underground passageways. (You can probably guess where that idea came from!) The hacienda in the story is actually a hybrid of two different haciendas, as I needed aspects of both in the plot. It was great fun creating this imaginary place, and I can’t wait to spend more time there.

Siren Song

(The Chameleon Effect #3)
Publication date: October 15th 2019
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult

Connell Kurēn doesn’t love being a paparazzo…

He’s a member of the most scorned profession in Hollywood, but he’s good at it, and a hard-ass to boot.

He might also be called an ambulance chaser, though not for the disreputable reason he chases celebrities. Connell has the ability to heal, and at the sound of a siren, he is drawn to those in need.

Life is just fine until his pushy paparazzi nature almost gets someone killed.

Rowan Bren suffers post-traumatic stress and a permanent headache following a near-death experience at the hands of her mortal enemy. After months, she still isn’t right, but she won’t be held back from seeking her bond mate, Con, any longer.

She travels to Los Angeles motivated to help her friend, Idris, with his brilliant plan to locate their missing people. But Rowan’s top priority in the City of Angels is to find Con. She doesn’t know where he lives, but she’s not worried, because her crystal will lead her straight to him.

When she trips into his world, she finds a man so different from the person she expects, she fears he might not be Con at all. That he might be possessed by an evil force like the one that almost killed her.

Siren Song is the third novel of the Chameleon Effect series.

Fall of the Western Kings Trilogy by J. Drew Brumbaugh Genre: Epic Fantasy

Gant is a commoner, forbidden from learning swordsmanship. He trains in
spite of the law and ends up branded an outlaw. However fate
intervenes while Gant is on the run and soon he is embroiled in an
odyssey with forces of darkness that can only be vanquished with help
from his friends, not all of whom are human. An epic that delivers
the best in the tradition of classic fantasy.
Child of Evil
Tirumfall Trilogy Book 2
The story started with “Fall of the Western Kings”. Now “Child
of Evil” continues the odyssey of Gant, the hero who killed Varg
with his magical sword Valorious and who must now use his strength
and cunning to find and neutralize the child born of evil. This child
is prophesized to lead the demons of the western kingdoms to victory
over the people of the east. Other characters accompany Gant to Ferd,
the city where the child will be born. Amelia is a shape-changer who
flies to the west to do reconnaissance only to be captured and
imprisoned. Pris, the emperor and blossoming wizard, worries about
the evil forces and knows the child cannot be allowed to unite the
demonic powers. His untested magic will be key to stopping the
impending doom. Dalphnia, Gant’s wife, is a woodland nymph who can
control the trees of the forest and is determined to see her husband
come through this journey alive. Can this unlikely group intervene in
time to stop the child and the carnage that is sure to follow? Will
it mean killing the child? Resolving this moral dilemma while
outwitting the demons and getting back to the safety of their homes
makes for a rousing adventure. “Child of Evil” is the
second book in J. Drew Brumbaugh’s fantasy series, The Tirumfall Triology.
I live in northeast Ohio where I write sci-fi, fantasy, and suspense
novels, along with a few short stories. Mostly I write stories I
think I’d like to read with characters that are interesting enough
that readers want to find out what happens to them. I also spend time
teaching and training at the karate dojo my wife and I founded,
building a Japanese garden in the back yard, and taking walks in the
woods with our dog. I have six novels in print, the most recent being
“Bula Bridge,” a collection of short stories, and a
co-authored children’s book. I continue to work on my next book and
seem to always have several stories in various stages of completion.

Mummy Dearest – A Pharaonic Adventure
Misadventures in Auckland Book 1
by Barbara Russell
Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy
During a school trip to the museum, thirteen-year-old Tess wakes up an
Egyptian mummy.
Cursed by a necromancer, Prince Seth has been inside a sarcophagus for two
thousand years. Now, he has no intention of going back into his tomb.
He wants a normal life, friends, and fresh food. So, he follows Tess
home, bandages and all.
Ancient Egyptian mummies bring bad luck. Since Seth’s arrival, a car has
almost run Tess over, and a lamppost nearly squashed
her. With Tess’s soccer team, the Wolverines, qualified for
the New Zealand Junior Soccer Championship, this curse could destroy
its chances of winning. Even worse, evil Egyptian spirits chase her
and Seth to take their souls into the world of the dead.
Unless they find the two-thousand-year old necromancer, who controls the
spirits and who gained eternal youth by cursing Seth, Tess and Seth
will be doomed forever.
The Boy Who Killed Santa Claus
Misadventures in Auckland Book 2
While other thirteen-year-old kids think about playing and riding their
bikes, Hau has to deal with fairies. He sees them everywhere—small,
green, tiny wings, with pointed ears like Legolas. And they talk to
him as well. In fact, they don’t want to shut up.
No one believes him, not even his mother or his best friend. Kids at
school call him names, and he’s just as popular as a visit to the
dentist.
On top of that, he’s the only one who knows the truth about Santa
Claus. Santa isn’t the nice, fatherly elf everyone believes. He’s
a bloodthirsty villain. Yep. Newt witnessed it with his own eyes when
Santa killed his father in cold blood right under the Christmas tree.
But again, no one believes him.
The Doom & Despair Entertainment Agency
Misadventures in Auckland Book 3
Welcome to the Doom & Despair Entertainment Agency where fear is always
guaranteed. Do you want a bunch of zombies for your next birthday
party? Vampires and ghosts at your wedding, frightening your guests?
No problem. The Doom & Despair Entertainment Agency organises the
scariest events in all New Zilla.
Except that, since the ghost of MacBatt Castle disappeared, business is
slowing down at the agency. A new, young ghost, Gwen, haunts the
castle, and she’s too nice to scare the customers. So, it’s up to
Orlando, a thirteen-year-old orphan who works for the agency, to help
Gwen in becoming scarier before his employer decides to send him back to
the orphanage.
The Girl with the Dragon-Raccoon
Misadventures in Auckland Book 4
While other fifteen-year-old girls dream about having a blood-sucking
boyfriend like in Twilight, Tyro has nightmares about vampires.
She has her share of vampires, zombies, and werewolves because her mum is
a dentist who attends to these monsters’ teeth.
So, when her mother and a vampire client disappear from the dental
clinic, leaving only a trail of blood, trashed furniture, and ripped
clothes behind, Tyro suspects one of the monsters kidnapped them or
worse that the vampire attacked her mum.
Either way, she’s in deep crap.
The police don’t believe her, and Jack, the vanished vampire’s son,
wants to take Tyro to Underworld City where hags, zombies, and all
kind of were-beings live. He plans to talk with the underworld police
that control supernatural creatures.
That’s his chance to show her that not every monster is a thug, and perhaps,
she’ll accept his invitation for the Disemboweller Ball. If only he
could keep his true nature secret. No girl would be attracted by a
guy who can turn himself into a half-dragon, half-racoon beast, with
no fire to speak of, no super-strength, and very tiny wings. How lame
is that?
Tyro would rather go to school wearing only her underwear than be alone
with Jack. What if going to Underworld City is a trap? What if he
wants to eat her?
But unless she teams up with him, she’ll never know what happened to
her mum. Armed with her courage and a bottle of garlic spray, she
accepts to travel to Underworld City with Jack.
After a monster killed her dad, her mum is all that is left of her family,
and she won’t leave her in the hands of brain-eating, blood-sucking
creatures.
