Deco Dames, Demon Rum and Death (Jazz Age Mystery Series)

Welcome to Defining Ways, Ellen Mansoor Collier.

  • Your book covers are a beautiful example of Art Deco. What made you interested in the 1920? Thank you! I couldn’t decide between illustrated Deco covers or covers with vintage photos/images so I did both—and it’s made my life very complicated, lol.  Between journalism jobs, I worked for two interior designers/ antique dealers and loved the sleek style of Art Deco: the fashions, furniture, cars, purses, accessories, architecture. As I learned more about the era, I realized how important it was socially for women, giving them liberation and opportunity. When women gained the right to vote, they felt free to work, go to college, drive, create. My grandmother earned a college degree and became a teacher, like my mother, who taught high school World History.
  • Are you from Galveston? I ask because my grandparents lived there for a year or two in the 1920s. How cool! How’d they end up in Galveston?  I grew up in Houston and Galveston was the go-to place for summer vacations, beach parties, honeymoons. In high school, a group of us ate at Gaido’s famed seafood restaurant on the Seawall (mentioned in DECO DAMES) before a formal dance—the drive then only took an hour, while today it can take at least two in traffic.
  • How many books are in your series? 5 total—DECO DAMES will be my last in the series, unless Amazon or Netflix come calling!
  • Is rum the base for your favorite drinks? What is your favorite 1920s drink?  I’m not a big drinker, but I’d like to sample a few! I do enjoy pina coladas—aren’t they made with rum? As a Texan, I’m partial to margaritas, particularly mango or raspberry.
  • How old are the male characters in your books and why?  My male protagonists, Sammy, Agent Burton, Nathan and the cub reporters, tend to be young, early to late 20s, the gangsters are in their 20s-30s, but the older reporters/ editors/gangsters are in their 50s.  I wanted to show the contrast of the young, naive, impulsive and inexperienced men between the older, jaded and not always wiser males (Mack, the senior journalist/some gang leaders).
  • How old are the female protagonists in your books and why? My female protagonists, Jazz and Amanda, tend to be young, early 20s, but Aunt Eva is roughly mid-30s and Jazz’s boss, Mrs. Harper is in her 50s. Jazz Cross, my heroine, and the younger women are at the stage where they’re rebelling against the status quo and trying to find their place in society.
  • Can you share some of the things that impacted you most in your research of the era?   Despite their new-found freedoms, many women remained stuck in the Victorian era (Aunt Eva), depending on men to give them support and status. Sadly, lots of men refused to accept the changing times and insisted women should become or remain homemakers and not find jobs outside of the home.
  • Best wishes for the greatest success with all your books.  Many thanks for featuring my Jazz Age series and all the great questions! Ellen
About the Book
Cozy Mystery
5th in Series
Decodame Press (December 28, 2018)
When young Galveston Gazette society reporter Jazz Cross hears rumors of grave robbers at the Broadway Cemetery, she and photographer Nathan Blaine investigate, hoping to land a scoop. The newshawks witness meetings held by clandestine gangs and enlist the help of her beau, Prohibition Agent James Burton, who attempts to catch the elusive culprits red-handed.
Meanwhile, the supernatural craze takes Galveston by storm, and Jazz is assigned to profile the society set’s favorite fortune teller, Madame Farushka. Sightings of a ghost bride haunting the Hotel Galvez intrigue Jazz, who sets up a Ouija board reading and séance with the spiritualist. Did the bride-to-be drown herself—or was she murdered?
Luckily, Sammy Cook, her black-sheep half-brother, has escaped the Downtown Gang and now acts as the maître d’ for the Hollywood Dinner Club, owned by rival Beach Gang leaders. During a booze bust, the Downtown Gang’s mob boss, Johnny Jack Nounes, is caught and Jazz worries: will Sammy be forced to testify against his former boss? Worse, when a mystery man turns up dead, Sammy is framed for murder and Jazz must solve both murders and help clear Sammy’s name.
As the turf war between rival gangs rages on, Jazz relies on her wits and moxie to rescue her brother and her friends before the Downtown Gang exacts its revenge.

A Life Singular
A Life Singular Series Book 1
by Lorraine Pestell
Genre: Contemporary Women’s Fiction

First in Epic 7-part Serial: Love and Loss, Celebrity and Secrets

The Endless Pursuit of Love and Wisdom

What do you do when you lose the one who gave your life meaning? You write
about it. You tell the world how amazing it is to love and be loved
by someone so special, what love helps you achieve and how it makes
you stronger.
Jeff Diamond had built a life of influence, adulation and wealth by making
the right choices for the right reasons. He lived by the law of
reciprocity, a lesson learned on the streets as a teenager with
nothing but an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Plagued by the
scars of a violent childhood, he created his vision and fought for
it. And once he no longer needed to fight for himself, he fought for others.
Yet when Jeff’s dream girl was taken from him and their children by the
ignorant act of a jealous misfit from his own home town, the
millionnaire realised just how far he had come. Why had he succeeded
when so many like him fail? It wasn’t complicated. The secret lay
in the endless pursuit of love and wisdom; life’s two magic
ingredients. Now Lynn was gone, he resolved to use his remaining days
to account for their life in a way that would inspire young people to
make his type of choice rather than García’s.
Then after their story was written, he would be free to go after her, to
begin the whole incredible journey over again. Everyone has a life
singular: one; unique; extraordinary.
A Life Found
A Life Singular Series Book 2
Writing an autobiography on behalf of someone else presented Jeff with an
interesting dilemma. Did he make assumptions about what Lynn would
have included, or should he restrict her contribution to direct
quotes from her letters and diaries? He had their kids to protect,
and her parents…
As he worked through the huge amount of material available in the press
about their life as it had taken shape, interlacing it with highly
personal stories, the widower crafted chapter after chapter of
memories, both happy and heartbreaking. If this was to be a true
account of their partnership, he owed it to the memory of his
beautiful best friend to cover so much more than what was already on
public record.
When it came to adding his own reminiscences of those early months, about
meeting someone he already knew intimately, Jeff had no difficulty in
recalling every single, vivid moment. Entire conversations came back
to him, sometimes word for word, rushing through his fingers and into
the computer.
Photographs prompted him too, as did the treasured possessions that surrounded
him, like the old leather jacket he had received on his twentieth
birthday. Lynn had left him shortly after that, just like she had
left him now. The pull of being together again was unrelenting, but
Jeff hung on to the dream that their life singular would one day
resume. Once their story had been told.
A Life Entwined
A Life Singular Series Book 3
Writing an autobiography on behalf of someone else presented Jeff with an
interesting dilemma. Did he make assumptions about what Lynn would
have included, or should he restrict her contribution to direct
quotes from her letters and diaries? He had their kids to protect,
and her parents.
Fame and fortune beckoned. Jeff Diamond was a success, whatever that
meant. Fans followed him everywhere, reporters and photographers hid
around every corner and journalists recorded his many indiscretions.
A whole different world to the downtrodden streets of Sydney’s
south-west, where vices were satisfied by using people to one’s
best advantage.
The star had more money than he could spend, his opinion suddenly
counted, and the opportunities to feed his ever-hungry mind were
plentiful. Yet the demons continued to torment him, no longer
protected by the guardian angel who had been spirited away as soon as
her family found out who Jeff Diamond was and where he had come from.
Suddenly the ambitious businessman and philanthropist found himself in the
fight of his life. He would win Lynn’s heart by showing her father
he was worthy, and by convincing his dream girl that they had
something worth fighting for. Would she risk throwing her privileged
lifestyle away for a man whose public persona depended on alcohol,
drugs and a string of pretty girls?
Jeff had nothing to lose. The trappings of his new life held little
significance until the soul-mates were reunited. This was where their
life singular really began. Up until this point, there had only been
playtime. Now they must step up and take responsibility. It was up to them.
A Life Lived
A Life Singular Series Book 4
So this was it! Lynn and Jeff, two celebrities driven to change the
world together, had grasped their life singular with both hands and
were not about to let go. They had the Midas touch, gifted through
the virtues of reciprocity and a deepening understanding of right
versus wrong.
The prospect of turning two into four, mirroring the black jetstone ring
that lived on the handsome man’s right hand, filled the couple with
excitement. Never in his wildest dreams had the no-good street kid
imagined himself as a father. His own had given him nothing. So much
less than nothing, in fact.
Should Jeff settle that score? Was it worth disturbing the paradise they had
planned, where their well-established careers showed no sign of
slowing down and their hard work yielded so much for so many?
Surfacing past wrongs and holding people to account for setting them
right were part and parcel of letting go, his dream girl had
insisted. And who was he to argue? She had been right all along.
As the book’s extraordinary chapters continued to document the
achievements of their life singular, the solitary author cried and
smiled in equal measure through the arrival of a small boy with
blond, curly hair and the sultry gipsy girl who could see inside his
soul from the moment she was born. Lynn had given him two new friends
who must now be steered through their young lives, learning their own
lessons about the endless pursuit of love and wisdom.
A Life Tested
A Life Singular Series Book 5
The world was an enormous place; full of good and evil, beauty and
ugliness, wonder and despair. Sometimes all seemed lost, returning
from the latest round of negotiations and attempting to balance the
surreal career of a chart-topping musician with the demands of an
advocate for those discarded by mainstream society. With every
problem the Diamonds worked to solve, a new one would be right around
the corner.
All was not lost, however. Unity and liberty, the
twin spirits living in two perfect beings waiting for him at home,
were all Jeff needed to spur him on. They would one day inherit the
world which he and his beautiful best friend were intent on changing
for the better, along with the millions of others who wrote to the
couple every day, seeking ever more of their energy, time and money.
The tired author kept reverting to the theme of
reciprocity. We should never take more than we give. If only they
could convince enough people of their byword… It was right that the
struggle should never end. What would he do if it did? There was no
room for self-satisfied fat cats in their life singular. What sort of
example might that set for those who must follow?
Lynn had departed, the children were growing stronger now, and the widower
heard the clock ticking night after night after night. Still with so
many amazing experiences to recount, the lost boy knew his dream girl
couldn’t wait forever. He was grateful for this opportunity to set
the record straight, but gratitude could only take him so far.
A Life Loved
A Life Singular Series Book 6
Lynn Dyson and Jeff Diamond had become the celebrity couple with the Midas
touch. With their son showing every sign of fulfilling his sporting
destiny and a teenaged daughter who was already driven to right the
world’s wrongs, they were showered with accolades and adoration
from every corner of the globe.
How had this nobody from the
wrong side of the tracks got so lucky? With his dream girl by his
side every step of the way, the superstar’s multi-faceted career
knew no bounds. Politicians clamoured for photo-opportunities, the
press hung on his every word and the success of their business empire
funnelled millions of dollars into worthy causes.
No wonder they had been an assassination target! Jeff’s autobiography
foretold this omen with twenty-twenty hindsight, his open wounds
smarting with each obvious opulent and outspoken occasion. “The
higher you climb, the harder you fall.” This tedious cliché rang
true for the father as he captured his teenagers’ many exploits for
posterity. He and Lynn had dared to scale enormous heights, paying
the ultimate price far too soon.
Had it all been worth it?
The book held these secrets, painstakingly transcribed by a man who
couldn’t wait to find out what was to come. Whether taken from his
lover’s journals, the children’s memories or the cataclysm of
poetry pouring from his lonely heart, the months leading up to his
next challenge had legitimised every decision the forever couple had
ever made.
He only hoped the same good fortune would hold true in the next lifetime.

It was now time to finish things off properly, and that began by

years. Gerry Blake had been his squash partner, his manager,
his drinking buddy and his best man through the whole incredible
journey, in so many ways his alter-ego. He was now getting

by what had happened to his old friend.
The thankful billionnaire and the ghost living inside his heart were

before continuing on their own quest for reunion. Would they
find a way to be together again? And how would the kids know to

Love, Lies, and Azure Eyes by Janis Thornton

LOVE-LIES-AND-AZURE-EYES-BANNER-540AzureEyesCover

Welcome to ❧Defining Ways❧  Annie Sinclair.

Q: Have you previously encountered more than one ghost, or earthbound spirit, in your life?

A: Before my dead classmates, Shelayne Goodnight and Johnny Lange, materialized in front of my eyes and scared the spit out of me, I had never encountered a ghost. I think that’s because prior to them sneaking up on me, no dead person had ever deemed me their ticket out of purgatory.

When you read “Love, Lies, and Azure Eyes” you will see why the ghosts of my former school chums tasked me with digging up the truth behind their deaths. Once I did, they were finally able to sever the ties binding them to earth and move into the light.

We’ve all heard the saying, “Life isn’t fair,” but after my stint as a reluctant “ghost whisperer,” I can tell you death isn’t fair either. I’m proud I could help Shelayne and Johnny cross over, but I sure hope they closed the door behind them. Securely. I do not want them — or any other troubled spirits — to pop in on me like that ever again!

Q: Your hometown Logan Point, Indiana, is described as small, so how many people live there?

A: That’s a good question, and I’m glad you asked. At the start of “Love, Lies, and Azure Eyes,” Logan Point’s population was 5,106. But by the Epilogue, that number had changed to 5,107. Isn’t that nice? Logan Point is growing!

Q: Do people live and work in Logan Point or do people commute?

A: Fifty years ago, very few Logan Point residents had to commute to metropolitan areas for work. Prior to that, the town enjoyed a robust manufacturing base and a vibrant Main Street. But after the advent of super highways and big-box stores, Logan Point’s self-sufficiency all but vanished, breadwinners were forced to earn their paychecks elsewhere, and Logan Point became a bedroom community. These days, however, Logan Point’s welcoming, small-town ambiance is attracting newcomers, who are moving in, while natives like me are coming home. Thanks to our combined resources, Logan Point is reinventing itself as a desirable destination, and my hometown is booming again.

Q: Did you travel to the past to reach a future, or did the past beckon you to return?

A: That’s another excellent question. Prior to my last trip home, I would only return to Logan Point if I absolutely had to. I felt like I’d outgrown my sleepy, little hometown the day I left for college. I never missed it. But then, something changed when two things brought me home: 1. A major writing assignment that I hoped would revive my dying career; and 2. A cryptic message from Dad — “I need you home so I can discuss some bidness with you.” … Less than two weeks later, the writing assignment led me to Mr. Right, and my dad’s “bidness” led to our long-overdue reconciliation. So it was the past that brought me home, and the promise of the future is keeping me there.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: A girl has to watch her weight, you know. So I stay away from my most favorite dish in the whole world — white cake with buttercream icing. With sprinkles. OMG! Just typing those words has made my mouth water, my heart race, and my stomach growl. Ummm … excuse me while I run out to White’s Market and Bakery. Be back in 20 minutes. I’ll bring you one, too.

Q: Do you miss the West Coast, or could the Midwest charm you back into residing there?

A: Indeed, the Midwest is charming, but it wasn’t what brought me back. I will always miss the West Coast, but Logan Point is where my heart is.

Q: Anything else we should know?

A: Yes … I want you and your readers to know that I’m enormously grateful for this opportunity to tell you a bit about how I helped the ghost of Johnny Lange prove he wasn’t the one who killed our classmate, Shelayne Goodnight, 25 years before; and how he turned the tables and taught me to trust again and open my heart to love. THANK YOU!

Elated by Annie’s response, Johnny caved to his impulse and pressed his mouth to her sweet lips, sparking a surge of electricity that ricocheted through his entire body, and for one glorious moment swept him up in a wave of emotion that meteorically whisked him to the edge of the universe, past swirling spirals of brightly burning stars — white dwarfs, red giants, entire galaxies. Caught in the rapture, he shed his cocoon of darkness and experienced the light — the wonderful, warm, life-affirming light. He reveled in it, felt alive. He almost believed he was. Almost.

West Coast journalist Annie Sinclair’s career, not to mention her love life, has been on the skids far too long, when she returns to Logan Point, her small, Indiana hometown. She’s back to make amends with her elderly father, and to delve into the 25-year-old, unsolved murder of her high school classmate for a writing gig with a national tabloid.
Annie’s plans soon go awry, and her mettle is tested — first when her father warns her against digging into the past; and again, when she meets the Logan Point Ledger’s handsome, but exasperating, new editor; and again still, when she reconnects with her first love, who clearly wants to rekindle what once was.
But Annie’s most arduous test appears in the form of the earthbound spirit of a boy she once knew — the boy with the azure eyes accused of the murder she is looking into. He needs her to prove his innocence, so he can break the ties that bind him to the darkness. In exchange, he will set Annie free to realize that the love she yearns for is just within her reach … if only she will open her heart.

Monsterland
Monsterland Series Book 1
by Michael Okon
Genre: YA Horror

Welcome to Monsterland—the scariest place on Earth.

Wyatt Baldwin’s senior year is not going well. His parents divorce, then his dad mysteriously dies. He’s not exactly comfortable with his new stepfather, Carter White, either. An ongoing debate with his best friends Melvin and Howard Drucker over which monster is superior has gotten stale. He’d much rather spend his days with beautiful and popular Jade. However, she’s dating the brash high-school quarterback Nolan, and Wyatt thinks he doesn’t stand a chance.

But everything changes when Wyatt and his friends are invited to attend the grand opening of Monsterland, a groundbreaking theme park where guests can interact with vampires in Vampire Village, be chased by werewolves on the River Run, and walk among the dead in Zombieville.

With real werewolves, vampires and zombies as the main attractions, what could possibly go wrong?

Monsterland Reanimated
Monsterland Series Book 2

After Monsterland has imploded, the entire world is thrown into chaos. World leadership is gone, economies have collapsed, and communications are non-existent. Wyatt must go beyond the boundaries of his small town to reestablish contact with the outside world, and alert the government about a traitor-in-chief.

During his journey he discovers a new threat released from the bowels of the defunct theme park.

When an army of relentless mummies, a life-sucking ooze called The Glob, and a hybrid reanimated Behemoth rise from the depths of Monsterland, who will survive?
