FIVE STARS
MY REVIEW
☆☆☆☆☆

TinkerActive SCIENCE Kindergarten is cleverly presented. Unlike
many workbooks the book quality was a surprise and such a treat! The paper
quality is thick and the back cover is hard board, YES! No matter where you
choose to work with your 5-6-year-old; carpool line, older siblings’ sports
practice, anywhere a busy mom’s life takes you. Also, the paper quality means
your child is likely to review the work, as if reading a fun book.
The pages and exercises are varied. There is active engagement,
including stickers! The activities use a wide variety of skills, to stimulate
young curious minds. They also allow the child to draw, which enhances
self-esteem and individuality.
I particularly liked how the exercises are presented using what
children observe and interact with often in their lives.  That is the best way to present hands-on
problem-solving skills.
I highly recommend the book as much for parents who like to  supplement their children’s school curriculum
as for parents who home-school.

The Lady Raven A Dark Cinderella Tale by Rebecca Henry

In The Lady Raven, Rebecca Henry tells the tale of Zezolla, a little
princess abandoned by her father into the hands of her evil
stepmother and wicked stepsisters. A familiar fairy tale you may
think but all is not as it appears. The reader is soon drawn into a
web of witchcraft, lies and deceit, and gradually realises that this
is no typical fairy tale but a dark and macabre take on one. Zezolla
is treated with the utmost cruelty, neglected and vilified, and left
to live in the damp cellars of the castle. The only friends Zezolla
has are her beloved raven and her pet wolf. Her only comfort lies in
the loyalty of the creatures of the forest and her mother’s hazel
tree. Will Zezolla have the power to escape her torment and
ultimately save herself from the unscrupulous clutches of the king?
The Lady Raven is a compelling tale and one that is not for the
faint-hearted.

An interview with a very funny guy; Michael Barakiva author of Hold My Hand

Hold My Hand
Michael Barakiva
Published by: Straus and Giroux (BYR)
Publication date: May 21st 2019
Genres: Romance, Young Adult

Alek Khederian thinks about his life B.E. and A.E.: Before Ethan and After Ethan. Before Ethan, Alek was just an average Armenian-American kid with a mess of curly dark hair, grades not nearly good enough for his parents, and no idea of who he was or what he wanted. After he got together with Ethan, Alek was a new man. Stylish. Confident. (And even if he wasn’t quite marching in LGBTQ parades), Gay and Out and Proud.

With their six-month anniversary coming up, Alek and Ethan want to do something special to celebrate. Like, really special. Like, the most special thing two people in love can do with one another. But Alek’s not sure he’s ready for that. And then he learns something about Ethan that may not just change their relationship, but end it.

Alek can’t bear the thought of finding out who he’d be P.E.: Post-Ethan. But he also can’t forgive or forget what Ethan did. Luckily, his best friend Becky and madcap Armenain family are there to help him figure out whether it’s time to just let Ethan go, or reach out and hold his hand.

Hold My Hand is a funny, smart, relatable take on the joy and challenges of teenage love, the boundaries of forgiveness, and what it really means to be honest.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

  • I am attracted by the book cover and the storyline. It feels light hearted but you tackle big social issues. How did you balance it?

As a closeted double genocide descendant, comedy is a survival mechanism.  My people – the Armenians, the Jews, the Russians – are pros at using comedy to defuse, to deal, to surprise, to cope. I suppose it wouldn’t occur to me to tackle big social issues any other way.  And also, what sounds more boring that big social issues sans comedy?

  • In reading your bio I must ask if there are echoes or reflections of your own experiences in life?

The entire thing is made up.  Any resemblance to real life is 100% coincidental. I’ll give you an example – Hold My Hand is set in a (fictitious) town in Central New Jersey approximately 40 miles south of New York City called South Windsor.  I grew up in a non-fictious town in Central New Jersey approximately 40 miles south of New York City called East Windsor.  See – no resemblance at all.

  • As you come from both an Armenian/Israeli what was the impetus to make the character Armenian vs. Israeli?

Maybe it’s because I grew up feeling closer to my mom (Armenian) to my dad (Israeli).  Maybe it’s because I grew up in a predominately Jewish suburbs, so being Armenian made me feel special-er.  Maybe it’s because Armenian stories aren’t often told.  Maybe it’s because the Armenian genocide isn’t acknowledged.  Maybe it’s because Armenian appears before Israeli alphabetically.

  • As a parent I am thrilled that today’s generations have a freedom of expression, was there a goal to help LGBTQ teens while entertaining?

OMG yes – when I was a teenager, we had so few LGBTQ characters and they were all victims of assault, HIV poz, or both. Most of the queer people I know (and I’m in the theatre, honey, so I know lots of ‘em!) do not define themselves by their queerness, or at least not solely by it.  I wanted to tell those full stories.  And because I’m a theatre person, for gods sake, yes, keep it entertaining. Ha-cha!

  • I also love that you tackle issues of honesty, forgiveness and teenage love. Those transcend to every culture and every sexual inclination which opens a broad audience. Forgiveness is often hard for people, what did you tap into to harness the feelings and convey them in paper?

As someone who is incapable of forgiveness, I had a lot of work to do.  First, I had to imagine that I had a heart, instead of a cold dark lump of coal that powered my body.

But seriously… I am blessed to have people in my life who forgives other people (like me) with great and effortless grace.  My husband Rafael comes to mind, as does my work wife Mary Beth Bunge, who is Episcopalian.  I like Episcopalians.

  • Anything else you would like to share with our visitors at❧Defining Ways❧?

I typed up all my responses to this whole interview and then MY COMPUTER DIDN’T SAVE THE DOC and I redid it all because I care.

Thanks Michael, best wishes for the greatest success, M.C.V. Egan

A Match Made in London by Christina Britton Genre: Historical Romance

Miss Rosalind Merriweather’s life has been one of hardship and servitude
since her late sister’s ruination. Now a paid companion, her latest
post brings her to London to watch over the daughter of a social
climbing harridan. She vows to protect her charge―and her own
heart―from rakes and libertines, the very type of man who destroyed
her sister. This vow proves difficult when Sir Tristan Crosby, the
epitome of all she despises, begins to show attention to the girl.
Tristan has spent decades perfecting his easygoing, charming persona to hide
the damage done by years of abuse by his father. Finding he has a
talent for matchmaking, he fills some of the emptiness inside him by
helping the overlooked, shy women of London find true love. However,
the latest young woman has a watchdog of a companion who seems to see
beyond his careful façade to the flawed, uncertain soul he strives
to hide from the world. Even worse, she affects him in ways no woman
ever has.
But he will not give up his matchmaking, even for one such as her. What
he does not expect is for Rosalind to be fired from her position
because of it―nor that she will immediately find a position in his
own household. When these two headstrong adversaries meet under one
roof, will their attraction to one another lead to heartbreak, or
have these two passionate souls finally met their match?
Christina Britton developed a passion for writing romance novels shortly
after buying her first at the tender age of thirteen. Though for
several years she turned to art and put brush instead of pen to
paper, she has returned to her first love and is now writing full
time. She spends her days dreaming of corsets and cravats and
noblemen with tortured souls.
She lives with her husband and two children in the San Francisco Bay
Area. A member of Romance Writers of America, she also belongs to
her local chapter, Silicon Valley RWA, and is a 2017 RWA® Golden
Heart® winner. Her debut novel, With Love in Sight, was released by
Diversion Books in early 2018.

THE UNIVERSAL MIND by Peter Weisz

The Universal Mind
by Peter Weisz
Genre: Speculative Non-fiction, Spiritual, Mystical
Are we all slaves to a gross illusion? Who are we? What is the mind, what
is consciousness and what is reality? This book offers educated
answers and explanations to all these questions and more. This book
motivates the reader to reconsider everything they think they know
about themselves and the world today, examining the different models
of creation, evolution of humanity and the universe, the essence of
matter and of life itself, exploring all manner of scientific,
theological, psychological and philosophical and metaphysical
hypotheses and offering insights into ancient mystical wisdom and the
road to enlightenment. Can it be, that this complex, living,
breathing, sophisticated, opinionated, creative and conscious entity
that we call human, is made up merely from a few invisible atoms of
nothingness? We are not simply made from flesh and blood – we are
beings of an infinity of dimensions, too vast to contemplate, but our
brains and our senses are only able to perceive that which is rooted
in matter, for that is the substance from which we believe we are
made. What we call reality, is most definitely not what it appears to be.

Peter Weisz (Dip Psych, HND, BACP) was born in London, England in 1961 and
practices as a psychoanalyst and therapist, specializing in psychodynamics and the
study of the subconscious and unconscious mind. He majored in
psychology, music, English language and literature. He is the
founding director of “One 2 One Counseling”, an organization offering personal
therapeutic support to those with emotional and psychological
disorders. He has worked at a number of private rehabilitation
facilities and treatment centres since 1998 including the world
renowned Priory Clinic
in London, England. Peter is knowledgeable in ancient and
contemporary philosophy, transcendental thought, general science,
theology and mystical & esoteric writings, both classical and
modern. He has also worked as a professional
musician
, singer/songwriter, producer and stage director for 25
years, travelling the world with a variety of bands and is the
founding director of “A Major Events”, a music production company in
