THE ENIGMA GAMERS

How you feel when other people are talking about your writing

This is an interesting topic for discussion.  Having recently attended an authors’ workshop, we spent a lot of time giving and taking feedback. When you talk about writing or listening to others talk about yours, we find there are two schools of thought. Someone can attack you personally rather than talk about the various writing aspects. For example, when you introduced John, you failed to provide the reader with enough detail to get them to draw a picture in their mind or connection. This far nicer than something like, That John guy you added was about as useless as your writing. You need to take your ideas into a dark hole and flush them out, before thrusting onto the public at large. A bit harsh at best.

As an author you expect all your targeted audiences to love your product. In our case that is a TechnoThriller story. The Breakfield and Burkey formula for that genre is real technology applied to a specific subject focus, such as cryptocurrency as in The Enigma Source, with characters who have real life backgrounds, travel, intrigue, mystery, and a dollop of humor. Not everyone who uses smart devices, likes a bit of complexity in their stories, or even appreciates applied technology. What we hope for are readers who fall in love with the stories and return for the growing character universe and the next immersive story we craft so our readers and listeners become our raving readers and voracious listeners.

Then there are written reviews, which we also consider other people talking about our writing. Kirkus Reviews has provided comments on every one of our stories https://www.kirkusreviews.com/ which has helped each subsequent story improve. In fact, one of their comments was regarding Julie and Juan who we had paired up to work a specific story angle. The comments Kirkus made were so favorable we decided to do a fork in the series at book #7, The Enigma Gamers – A CATS Tale, to explore their new business of feet-on-the-street cyber technicians. We recently released this in audiobook format with our fabulous narrator, Derek Shoals, our voice of the series.

Reading all the reviews is something Burkey takes seriously and does each morning. Make certain and do a lot of reviews so she can make a day of reading them. If they are mean spirited, she is depressed and tries to analyze all the inuendoes whether stated or imagined. One extremely mean review was a personal attack that questioned our professional careers. In an effort to seek clarity an email exchange was done by Burkey which allowed further pointed comments to be made. Some people love being “trolls” based on the anonymity of the Internet today so they can launch unfounded attacks without having to look the person in the eye. It is a real shame as it only demonstrates a lack of personal integrity.

Constructive feedback is something Breakfield and Burkey appreciate. We try very hard to be mindful of our fans and their enjoyment of our stories. The commentary we have received on various characters’ and their evolution have made us smile. People tend to evolve just like our characters do. Some in good ways and others in poor ways. In our stories the bad actors do eventually receive their just deserts.

We very much look forward to hearing your comments or seeing your reviews. You can reach us directly at Authors@EnigmaSeries.com.

EXCERPT FROM RISE OF PROPHECY

Gods. War. Judgement Day. Novelist Abdur R Mohammed blends ancient myth, religious belief systems, and his deep imagination to create a fantastic new world on the pages of his fiction debut, Rise of Prophecy.

The Age of Virgo ends with an ancient Anuk prophecy looming over the world: peace ushers in prosperity; war brings annihilation. Prince Timon of Atlantis seeks the power of the Anuk star-people to conquer the world, but is challenged by the mysterious Liviana, who attempts to prevent the prophecy from unfolding. She is on a collision course with Alexius, a disgraced noble who inherits a secret from the gods. War is coming. Mortals and gods are in an epic power game in which strength, smarts, and allegiances are tested.

Chapter 19: The Gap of Cora

~ The Gap of Cora ~

It was just four days ago when Alexius ran into Stavos with prince Timon at the underground fight club.  There was nothing out of character with the Commander then, but the next day, there was an anxious way about him.  They made their way to Cappadocia with haste, barely set up camp, and battled the nomad warriors.  Now without rest, they were about to storm what looked like dwellings.

Then there were the physical signs of anguish in Stavos.  His eyes were bloodshot with bags forming under his eyelids.  He was always sweating as if his body was trying to burn out an infection.  He was quick to get angry, and rarely made any sarcastic comments about, anything.  There is something wrong with him, Alexius acknowledges silently.

“Do you know what a nomad child turns into?” Stavos asks, “A warrior!  This is our chance to stamp out the disease, here, now!”

Horror overcomes Alexius, “You’re talking about genocide; mothers, children, families.”

“You’re a fucking soldier!” Stavos points out.  “Those little shits will turn into the dead out there.  Before that, they will wait to slit your noble throat the first chance they get.  Don’t go soft on me now.  Tell you what, you and Deidra can plunder when we are finished.”  Alexius looks at him as if he got caught with his hands in the coffers.  “I know about your exploits.”
